Painfully, there seem to be too many people in the current U.S. administration who choose to deny that Climate Change is real. They do this to avoid having to make massive change that will surely decrease the profits to the corporations and military industrial complex that benefits them by digging up the earth, poisoning the skies, and utterly polluting our air ,water, and soil.
Here is an instance of citizens being traumatized to the point of apathy, or inaction, and denial. Climate Change is an unwanted, unexpected (as a reality) and psychically painful experience. Just the thought of humanity going extinct along with monarch butterflies and many other species is horrific to us and is as unnatural to us as killing others or letting children starve and die on the country’s southern border. Or countries refusing access to climate refugees who seek asylum. Many Americans soon will be trying to relocate as well..
These issues alone could push people to despair. I know from time to time I find it all somewhat overwhelming. There are a myriad of informative documentaries and talks on YouTube and other sources that clearly describe what is happening to the planet. One of the best I have seen yet is at Films for the Planet – it’s a rental. It is narrated and written by the actor Jeff Bridges. It starts right out with the plight of the monarch butterfly. It will make you weep. As a final thought Bridges asks what you can do to cope and help the planet. He suggests you do what you can with what you know and from where you are. Something (s) that more or less come naturally to you.
For me, I have decided to put everything else aside (I will keep my day job) and write a book dealing with what I perceive as a Global Spiritual Crisis occurring , encouraging people to live a non-violent life style, including stopping violence against the earth. In addition, I entered into the peace and action movements of my community where the ground swell of grass roots organizing and energy will facilitate the turning of the political and economic tide. Those of you who may feel our situation is hopeless might think again instead of panicking. For example Paul Hawken has written Drawdown The Most Comprehensive Plan Ever to Reverse Global Warming. Or Facing Climate Change by Jeffrey Kiehl, or The Global Heart Awakens by Anodea Judith, Ph.D.
I have not owned a car for over ten years. I use the public transit and trains, and walk everywhere I can. I am continually purging my home of unused things and donating them. I talk with people constantly about the social concerns most of us share and remind them that we are all in this world together and are all interconnected and as such are obligated to show love, forgiveness and kindness toward one another. At my day-job I manage a 90 unit rental property in my city. I work to help the residents at the property, many of whom are young families, to feel safe, calm, and comfortable in the community as well as to share information such as that from Washington’s Governor Jay Inslee who has already but into place a plan for the state to cut fossil fuel emissions and more and has declared a Climate Emergency!
Do not be intimidated or bullied. Stand up!
Many blessings to you and your loved ones.
